Tabuk City, Kalinga – In a rare and meaningful gesture of honor, the Province of Kalinga conferred upon His Excellency Archbishop Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, the honorary title “Son of Kalinga” and bestowed on him the Kalinga name “Tunggayok.”

The Apostolic Nuncio arrived in Kalinga on Monday, June 1, where he was warmly welcomed by provincial officials led by Governor James S. Edduba, Vice Governor Dave Odiem, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, local chief executives, and other dignitaries.

On June 2, Archbishop Brown presided over the Episcopal Ordination and Installation of Rev. Fr. Sean Mejia as the third Apostolic Vicar of Tabuk at St. William’s Cathedral.

During the welcome program held at the Kalinga Sports Center on June 1, the provincial government formally declared Brown a “Son of Kalinga” through Resolution No. 2026-208, which was adopted by the Provincial Board during its regular session on May 5, 2026.

Along with the honorary title, Brown was bestowed the Kalinga name “Tunggayok.”

Based on a copy of the resolution obtained by GURU Press Cordillera from Board Member Emilio Kitongan, “Tunggayok” refers to a spiritual healer and guide who brings peace, wisdom, and moral strength to the community.

The name also symbolizes deep respect, fraternity, and the rich cultural identity of the Kalinga people.

Archbishop Brown, who was born on October 13, 1959, in New York, United States, has served as Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines since September 2020. As the diplomatic representative of the Holy See to the country, he has been recognized for embodying the ideals of international diplomacy, pastoral leadership, and Christian fraternity.

The resolution cited his faithful diplomatic and pastoral mission in Ireland, Albania, and the Philippines, where he helped strengthen relations between the Holy See and various nations while guiding the faithful toward Christian unity, peace, and compassion.

Provincial officials also acknowledged his consistent promotion of social action rooted in Christian charity and his call for both the faithful and public servants to address poverty, corruption, malnutrition, and social division.

“In recognition of Archbishop Brown’s steadfast and exemplary pastoral ministry, his distinguished representation of the Holy See, and his enduring witness to humility, compassion, and servant leadership, the Province of Kalinga deems it fitting and proper to confer upon him the honorary title ‘Son of Kalinga’ and the name ‘Tunggayok,’” part of the resolution stated.

The resolution further noted that the conferment signifies acceptance, kinship, and respect, symbolizing a lasting bond between the honoree and the people of Kalinga.

With the conferment, Archbishop Brown joins the distinguished roster of national and international personalities who have been adopted by the province in recognition of their contributions to society and their embodiment of the values cherished by the people of Kalinga.

For Kalinga, the title goes beyond a ceremonial honor—it is a symbol of friendship, respect, and shared commitment to faith and service. Through the name “Tunggayok,” Archbishop Brown is now forever linked to the province and its people.
