Pasil RHU in Kalinga awarded for exceptional performance in newborn congenital disorder tests

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

Pasil, Kalinga – The Newborn Screening Center (NBC) of Central Luzon awarded Pasil Rural health Unit of Kalinga a certificate of recognition for its exceptional performance in the proper collection of quality newborn screening samples for the year 2021.

To recall, the health unit was likewise recognized for attaining the same in 2020.

NBC – Central Luzon announced the news on June 27, but the office was only able to receive the certificate on Tuesday, September 20.

Newborn screening is a set of tests done to enable the early detection and management of several congenital disorders, which, if left untreated, may lead to mental retardation and even death. Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment, along with appropriate long-term care, help ensure normal growth and development of the affected individual.

For two consecutive years now, Pasil RHU holds a record of good quality newborn screening samples (<1% unsatisfactory rate) thus, helping the government improve the health of Filipino children.

In 2021, the local health unit had a total of 18 screens and none of which were rated “unsatisfactory,” relayed Medical Technologist Marlyne Gammong, the lead of the Newborn Screening Team.

An “unsatisfactory” result means that screening results cannot be accurately interpreted because of a problem with blood spot collection, inaccurate information on the newborn screening card, or a problem with the infant's age.

“Again, congratulations, and may you continue supporting the newborn screening program. Let us all work hand in hand to help save more babies from mental retardation and death,” expressed NBC – Central Luzon.

Pasil RHU took to social media to thank the excellent performance of its newborn screening team under the leadership of Gammong.

Gammong, in an interview, conveyed she is delighted that their hard work is being recognized.

“Agyamanak met lang ken Lord ta kanayunak latta nasalun-at nga ap-apan ti adayo nga barangay nga apan ag-NBS,” she added.
