Balbalan, Kalinga – Amid modernization and ongoing developments in a progressing municipality like Balbalan, Vice Governor Dave Odiem reminded iBalbalans to remain passionate in preserving their vibrant heritage during the iBalbalan Day on March 25, 2026.

Speaking before townsfolk and visitors at the Balbalan Central School, Odiem defined heritage as the connection that binds the ancestors who paved the way for what Balbalan is today and the present generation working to further improve what has already been started. He added that heritage includes language, traditions, values, land, and both tangible and intangible treasures passed down by forefathers.

Odiem asserted that these ancestors worked hard to preserve the culture and ensure that future generations are guided by the “wisdom” of Bodong and the “discipline” of the Kalinga core values of Paniyaw, Ngilin, and Bain.

“True progress is about not abandoning who we are, but about carrying our identity proudly as we move forward. It reminds us that our identity and strength come from the wisdom of our ancestors,” he said.

The vice governor further emphasized that progress should be sustainable—embracing innovation and development while remaining grounded in heritage, protecting the environment, and ensuring the transmission of culture to future generations.

“True development is not measured only by the height of our buildings, or the cemented roads in our barangays, but by our ability to protect our mountains, rivers, our rich tradition, music, and craft and pass them down to the next generations,” he expressed.

Odiem concluded his message by assuring the people of Balbalan of his continued support, saying, “I pledge to continue our support for legislative measures that preserves our heritage, protect our ancestral domains, empower our Balbalan communities, and bring comfort and inclusive development to every household in Balbalan. Together, let us work towards a future where our heritage is celebrated, our progress is sustainable, and our unity is unbreakable.”
