“Schools will re-open August 22 amid earthquake impact”-DepEd CAR

Updated: Aug 7, 2022

Baguio City, Philippines – Despite the devastating effects of the earthquake that shook Abra and other provinces in Cordillera, schools in the region are obliged to reopen on August 22 as earlier scheduled by the Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte.

School establishments were among the infrastructures damaged by the magnitude 7.0 that hit Abra and shook provinces in Northern Luzon on July 27.

Sadly, aftershocks added to the destruction of school properties.

Additionally, more than the physical damage, some learners and teachers are facing psychological trauma from the tremor.

With all these, Director of Department of Education – Cordillera Estela Cariño stressed that the school reopening cannot be delayed by the department “to still deliver quality education” in the face of the situation.

“So, whether the school is totally damaged, teachers are not psychologically ready, some learners are not psychologically ready, we will have to start classes by August 22, 2022,” stated Cariño in a press conference held Tuesday, August 02.

Learning set-up

According to the regional director, hybrid learning modalities, including pure self-learning modules, HyTEQ (Hybrid Learning using Technology with Equity and Quality) and online/offline modules shall be implemented in schools that suffered total building or classroom damage.

The department likewise said they asked for two weeks extension of class reopening for the schools that experienced total wreckage.

For schools unaffected by the quake, face-to-face classes shall be imposed. Excess classrooms or buildings shall be made available for other schools in need of such.

Further, in-person classes will be implemented for schools with structures that can still be repaired. These schools shall prioritize core learning areas, particularly English, Science and Mathematics.

Psychosocial support

Cariño disclosed that quake-affected teachers and learners may avail of the psychosocial support to be provided by their department from August 15 to 19.

As of August 02, there are 101,672 learners enrolled from Kindergarten to Senior High School.
