Baguio City, Philippines – The establishment of specialized high schools in Baguio City is now getting closer to realization.

House Bills 7316 and 8700 which seek to create the Baguio City High School for the Arts and Baguio City Sports High School, respectively have been recently approved by the House of Representatives on third reading.

The City Public Information Office informed that said bills have already been forwarded to the senate for appropriate recommendations from concerned committees.

High School for the Arts

HB 7316 Principal Author, Congressman Mark Go, conveyed that the creation of a high school for the arts in Baguio City will serve as an avenue for the young ones in the city and neighboring places to hone their gifts in culture and the arts.

The art-focused school will be ‘administered and supervised’ by the Department of Education in coordination with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines which will provide policy direction and technical assistance.

Baguio City Sports High School

The Baguio City Sports High School, meantime, will provide a sports-focused curriculum to young athletes which will help enhance Baguio’s identity as home of sports talents.

“It shall establish, maintain, and support a comprehensive and integrated system of education and training to encourage interest in sports among the youth, hone their athletic talents and skills, and promote the development of young athletes nationwide,” the bill reads.

The sports high school shall be administered and supervised by the DepEd in coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission and the National Academy of Sports (NAS) ‘for the policy and program formulation and implementation, and technical assistance’.

As these bills are now in the senate, Baguio City district representative hopes the Upper House will be able to act on them when the 19th Congress resumes sessions after the holiday break.
