Self-inflicted incident in Peñablanca, Cagayan leaves 1 dead, another injured

Updated: Apr 12

Peñablanca, Cagayan – Driving while drunk remains as one of the leading reasons for fatal traffic accidents in the country, according to the World Health Organization.

Twenty-five percent of an estimated 12,000 people who die each year due to road crashes were killed for said reason.

The same reason killed a 34-year-old man and sent another individual into critical condition and now under intensive medical care.

According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, the two were found unconscious on the roadside when they swiftly dispatched in the accident scene around 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.

Assessments conducted disclosed the two sustained fractures and lacerations on their head and multiple abrasions and lacerations on various parts of their bodies.

First aid was immediately applied to the victims. However, when they were sent to the Cagayan Valley Medical Center by the responding team, Santiago Libar was declared dead on arrival at exactly 12:24 a.m on Sunday, April 7.

The other victim, identified as Ronaldo Miguel, is still at the hospital fighting for his life.

It was known that the two came from a drinking spree when the fatality, who was said to be under the influence of alcohol, persuaded Miguel to accompany him to Tuguegarao City.

However, their trip was cut short when Miguel suddenly lost control of the motorcycle while at the Tawi Bridge, resulting in a tragic accident.
