SP Kalinga backs Tabuk campus journalists joining the NSPC in Ormoc City, provides cash aid from own pockets

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Kalinga extended its support to Tabuk City’s campus journalists who are set to compete at the upcoming National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Ormoc City, Leyte.


The delegation, fresh from their victories at the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) in Abra, paid a courtesy call on the provincial board during its regular session on Tuesday, March 24.


Led by Vice Governor Dave Odiem, the board formally recognized the students and their coaches for their achievement, while offering words of encouragement and urging them to maintain excellence on the national stage.


“Lalaingen yo pay ken ipakita yo latta ti disiplina ken respeto idiay event. Good luck kanyayo. Ipakita yo ti best yo. You are not just competing—you are representing Kalinga,” the legislators said.


In a further show of support, the board members also extended cash assistance to the young journalists from their own pockets, a gesture that drew appreciation from both the students and coaches.


The team members include Jansen Paul Lingbawan (feature writer); Maja Rianne Bag-acon (editorial writer); Janmark Malamnao (news writer); Khyt Avery Garcia (sports writer); Yana Chrisca Dasayon (photojournalist); Kendrah Fraulein Balbin (cartoonist); Yran Vember Ventura (layout artist); Lilinette Godinez (coach); and Melanie Baterina (coach).


Talking to Guru Press Cordillera, coach Melanie said the visit was meant to formally present their team and have their achievement recognized by the provincial government.


She added that their appearance before the august body came unexpectedly after they were invited by Board Member Christopher Donaal.


“Inmay kami ditoy nag-courtesy call, sir, tapno met kasla ma-acknowledge dagitoy ubing. Nakaka-overwhelm po ang acknowledgment ng ating mga Board Members. Maragsakan kami launay. Happy kami, sir, ta unexpected met nga in-invite na dakami ni Board Member Christopher Donaal nga umay mi kanu ipakita dagitoy ubing,” said Baterina.


The NSPC, an annual event of the Department of Education (DepEd), is scheduled from April 13 to 17. The event brings together the country’s top campus journalists to compete in various journalism categories.


Presided over by Vice Governor Odiem, the March 24 Sangguniang Panlalawigan session was attended by Board Members Emilio Kitongan, Julius Amla, Christopher Donaal, Romeo Saclag, Roger Saga-oc, Jerome Chester Alunday, Jay Harley Dugiang, Camilo Lammawin Jr., Michael Karel Sugguiyao, Rasha Ariadz Campilis, and Marc Rainier Duguiang.
