Tanudan, Kalinga─708 bags of certified seeds were provided to rice farmer-beneficiaries in the Municipality of Tanudan under Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF), aimed at ensuring food security and making the country’s agriculture sector viable, efficient and globally competitive.

The farmer-beneficiaries are from 8 barangays of the municipality, Dupligan, Mabaca, Lay-asan, Pangol, Dacalan, Ga-ang, Lubo and Mangali.

Tanudan Agricultural Technologist Daniel Suma-al said that 640 bags have already been distributed to barangays in Lower Tanudan, Dupligan, Mabaca, Lay-asan, and Pangol.

Said rice seeds were claimed at Tanudan Municipal Sub-office located in Barangay Mabaca. The distribution was done from December 14-18, 2020.

The remaining 68 bags of rice seeds were coordinated to Punong barangays and municipal agricultural technicians in Upper Tanudan.

Suma-al said that the decision is to assure farmers utilize the rice seeds for their farm lands and ensure reported unused rice seeds will not happen again.

He further reiterated to the farmers to register. He said “it may be coffee, rice, corn, poultry, fishery, vegetable, or hogs, the significance of enrolling to Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) for them to avail such benefits from the government and given priority in the targeting and implementation of their respective programs services.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Jaedicke Dagadag expressed his gratitude to the concerned government agencies in providing the free rice seeds to the Tanudan farmers. He then asked the farmer-beneficiaries to take advantage of this opportunity to develop and expand their income amid the ongoing battle with the pandemic.

Said rice seeds distribution is under the Republic Act no. 11203, otherwise known as the “Rice Tariffication Law” to improve rice farmers’ competitiveness and income amidst liberalization of the Philippine rice trade policy that lifted quantitative restrictions on rice imports and replaced it with tariffs, among others.
