Tabuk City, Kalinga – Once approved, the ordinance proposed by Kalinga Board Member Frederick Pangsiw will form the basis in giving P50,000 incentive to centenarians in the province as well as giving recognition through the Provincial Local Government Unit.

Pangsiw stated that aside from the P50,000, the centenarian shall be given a letter of felicitation from the governor, acknowledging the person’s longevity and a plaque of recognition.

Upon completion of necessary documentary requirements, the yKalingas who have reached 100 for a certain fiscal year shall be given the award and incentives on the first Sunday of October which is declared under Republic Act 10868 as the National Respect for Centenarians Day.

Further, under the said ordinance, the funding shall be allocated by the Kalinga PLGU in its regular budget.

Why provide added incentives to centenarians?

In an interview, Pangsiw mentioned that under existing laws, a 100-year-old person is entitled to receive P100,000 from the national government. However, it is the prerogative of the local government to give incentives to its centenarians. For example, an ordinance by the City Local Government Unit of Tabuk provides another P50,000.

“…in Tabuk City, Tabuk laeng iti kasla a saksakupen na, what about the entire province piman? Nu mabalbalin kuma ket amin kuma a taga ditoy Kalinga,” he said.

Pangsiw added that apart from giving recognition to centenarians, this will encourage the people to take good care of their health and themselves for them to be around longer.
