Tabuk City, Kalinga—In celebration of Consumer Welfare Month this October, the Department of Trade and Industry-Kalinga called on all consumers to be vigilant and exercise their rights when buying.

During the destruction of confiscated uncertified products, DTI-Kalinga Senior Trade Industry Development Specialist Maria Cecilia Baral reiterated that consumers have the right to report, or complain if the items displayed by the seller are defective.

According to the senior specialist, it is important for consumers to consider first the safety and quality of products over price.

“All consumers should be very vigilant and wise because consumerism is everybody’s concern. Dapat mapanuri tayo kung ano ba yung binibili natin,” Baral stated.

The department is likewise regularly verifying the products being sold in the market to check if they conform to the marking requirements of the Department Advisory Order Number 2 series of 2007.

On October 5, 2021, several confiscated uncertified products were destroyed in front of the DTI Office.

The senior specialist explained that not all products were covered by the Mandatory Philippine National Standards, of which the Philippine Standard marking on products is compulsory.

The department is then focusing on these standard products as of now, as other products do not have ‘test to go through yet.’

“As of now, hindi lahat ng products covered ng mandate, pero merong mga products na covered ng mandatory standard, especially if it affects lives and properties like these electrical products, isu dagitoy ti mabanbantayan” Baral said.
