BFAR-Kalinga continues SAAD program granting P.7M projects to fisher groups

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The implementation of the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program of the Department of Agriculture continues with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Kalinga recently awarding 4 units of fish cages to Burubor Bulo 4H Club and Turod Bulo 4H Club.


Said fish cages amounts to P200,000.00. Some of the 15 units fish cages which were already distributed, while some are yet to be delivered to different organizations in the province.

An amount of P750,000.00 was utilized to fund said project.


Recipients of the 7 unit fish cages were given to associations in Barangay Wagud in Pinukpuk, Barangay Tanglag in Lubuagan, and Barangay Lacnog, Tabuk City.

The agency is yet to disperse the remaining 4 units.


Composition of a unit of a fish cage


Components of the fish cages are 435 bags of feeds, 45,000 pieces of fingerlings, net cage materials and bamboos. According to the agency, each unit of fish cages need 30 pieces of full length matured bamboos to be used in making and fixing the cage.


Aim of the program


In an interview with Provincial Fishery Officer Joyce Ducyogen, she said the over-all aim of the program is to provide a source of livelihood to recipients and to increase fish production in the province.

In addition, as said by Ducyogen, this is also to maximize the use of small water impounding projects by putting fish in it for food production while being used for irrigation purposes.

Selection of recipients was done in coordination with Municipal Agricultural Offices in different localities in the province.


“Kitaen da metlang ngay diyay han nga maatyanan nga dagus, napipintas nga site nga mabalin…” she said.


Recipients were encouraged by the officer to take the opportunity to involved themselves in such livelihood project.


“While we are doing our farming activities, we also need to produce fish for our own ngamin every now and then fluctuating ti food tayu ken daytuy sitwasyon tayo nga restricted ti movement, its better now that we produce our food in our locality,” she advised.


“And once na nabigyan ng project, we have to sustain it para naman may continous na food for the family,” she added.


SAAD is a locally-funded program of the DA which aims to help alleviate poverty among the marginalized sectors on agriculture and fishery.
