Sagada to re-open tourism industry in October

Updated: Oct 6, 2021

Sagada, Mt. Province – The Municipality of Sagada is eyeing to gradually re-open its tourism activities on the first week of October once it has complied with the recommendations of the Department of Health.

Mayor James Pooten Jr. revealed this in an interview with PTV Cordillera, saying “Kung mayroong pagkakataon ay yan nga, slowly, gradual ang reopening ng tourism ng Sagada.”

He added that at present they are looking for possible means to reopen tourism activities in cooperation with the Department of Health, where stricter health safety requirements will be observed, especially that COVID-19 cases continue to rise in nearby municipalities.

Among the measures being undertaken at present is the inoculation of 1,500 tourism workers, as the municipality was able to secure 3,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines recently.

As a preparatory measure, they held a dry run last month to review the mechanisms that would be instituted for the reopening of the town’s tourism industry with the participation of 30 personnel from the Department of Tourism, Local Government Units, and stakeholders from the tourism industry in the region.

The dry run evaluated the plan of utilizing an online registration system to minimize the entry of guests to only 100 tourists a day, accommodation, validation of registered guests, and compliance to requirements imposed. Also checked was the capability of stakeholders for guest management and experiences to new tour packages that include the agricultural sector in the promotion of the locality’s farm tourism.

The town, as recalled, shut its door to tourists on February 13 last year to deal with the pandemic, depriving the town of earning around P200 million through its tourism industry.

Before the pandemic began, Sagada was frequented by a large number of tourists who wanted to enjoy the locality’s popular attractions like mountain valleys, rice fields, burial and limestone caves, waterfalls, and cliffs that come with a sea of clouds.
