Baguio City, Philippines – The hike in the pension of indigent senior citizens in the Cordillera region is expected to be enforced by the year 2023, says the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The implementation will double the P500 monthly pension to P1,000 for those under the government’s Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens program. This is pursuant to Republic Act No. 11916, which lapsed into law on July 30, 2022.

The measure was pushed by the government to ensure that the elderly sector gets continued support, covering their medical needs and daily subsistence.

The senior pension, explained DSWD, is being provided to qualified senior citizens who are frail, sickly, or with a disability, and without a pension or permanent source of income, compensation, or financial assistance from their relatives to support their basic needs.

The agency is crafting the Implementing Rules and Regulations for the said hike.

According to the Regional Director of DSWD-Cordillera, Leo Quintilla the elderly will be receiving P500 for the 4th quarter this year while they are waiting for the fund.

On October 23, Senior Citizen Party-list, Representative Rodolfo Ordanes gave assurance that the Congress will find a way for the funding of the provision.

Further, Abra Congresswoman Menchie Bernos who is part of the Committee on Appropriations likewise vowed support for the implementation of the legislation.

DSWD-Cordillera listed a total of 102,133 senior citizen pensioners in the region as of their third quarter distribution.
