Tabuk City, Kalinga − A nurse and an assistant professor from Tabuk City, Kalinga was recognized as ‘Best Negotiator’ during the Best Diplomats Model United Nations Simulation Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 4 to 7, 2022.

The award is one of the major accolades being given to participants of the said international conference. The convention was attended by chosen young professionals to develop their diplomacy, negotiation, and leadership.

The conference was an avenue for discussion of global issues such as genocide, climate change, and nuclear disarmament, among others.

Of the 150 diplomats from all over the world who were picked to join the event, Hope Lulet Lomioan, who is a nurse and an Assistant Professor at St. Tonis College, was conferred the ‘Best Negotiator’ award.

Attaining the award

Hope told Guru Press Cordillera that there were actually around 5,000 young professionals from different countries who applied for the conference. These applicants were screened rigidly until they were down to 150 diplomats.

The nurse said there were three major activities that served as a basis for the major awards. The first was the Diplomatic Stance where every participant was required to speak about a country’s national interest and foreign policy in a nutshell.

The next activity was the Coalition Formation, wherein they were formed into a bloc - a group of countries working together. Hope said she successfully formed a coalition of nations believing in neutrality and peaceful coexistence based on the national interest of Burundi, the country they represented.

“Being the Secretary General of my coalition of the neutral bloc nations, I was able to get eight sponsors, 48 signatures, as well as 56 General Assembly votes for the resolution my bloc created,” she said, adding the number of signatures that they were able to gather for their resolution showed their negotiation skills.

The third activity was the actual formulation of their resolution.

In the end, Hope’s outstanding performance was recognized through the ‘Best Negotiator’ award conferred to her.

Filipinos can shine and conquer the world

While she never expected to bring home any international award, especially from the said conference, Hope conveyed she is happy to prove that Filipinos can shine and conquer the world stage.

Apart from being overwhelmed with the award she received, Hope was likewise thrilled to get to meet people supporting each other for good causes and appreciating one another’s efforts and good qualities while aiming to stand out in an event.

While she is the most reserved when she’s with her friends, the conference taught Hope she can and must stand out and that she should give her best only for what is truly important.

“Also, I learned that we don’t have to be in competition with others to be the best. Rather, we must compete against ourselves to bring out the best in us,” she stressed.

The assistant professor, who is also currently the Program Administrator for the College of Nursing at St. Tonis College, acknowledged all who have supported her in her journey as one of the 150 participants of the Best Diplomats Model United Nations Simulation Conference.
