Ykalingas in New Zealand celebrate Kalinga Day

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Enjoying a Covid-19 free country, yKalingas and other Filipinos in New Zealand gathered to celebrate Kalinga Day.

Around 150 attendees proudly wearing their native attires gathered together on February 7 to echo the sound of Kalinga and Cordilleran gongs and bamboo instruments showing different cultural dances in the region as a way of marking Kalinga’s founding anniversary.

Mercy Maximo Balliyao, organizer of the Kalinga Group in New Zealand said the event was organized as a way of easing their nostalgia and also as a way of getting to know their fellow yKalingas and Cordillerans in New Zealand.

“... and most of all pagraragsakan ken pagikkat ti iliw kadagiti pamilya mi nga nabati dita Pilipinas,” she said.

Balliyao added that the event was graced by the presence and performances of individuals from Benguet, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Apayao, and Abra. The Ilocanos were also there and the Kiwis.

The event was successful, the organizer said and that they did not have to wear face masks as their Covid-19 situation is well managed by their Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“Yeah! That’s why we enjoyed, and it was a very successful event,” she stressed.

Meanwhile, since the Philippines is still under the threat of Covid-19, Kalinga will be commemorating the Kalinga Founding Anniversary and Bodong Festival in a simple celebration on February 14 which will be aired live on Facebook.
