Cagayan, Philippines – Some fishermen had their fishing trip to remember off the coast of Calayan, Cagayan as they had a rare catch of a giant grouper, known locally as lapu-lapu, over the weekend.

The large fish, caught in the Babuyan Channel, between Santa Ana and Camiguin Island, weighed an estimated 141 kilograms or as much as two full-grown men.

Locals, including social media users, were amazed when they saw the uploaded photo of the lapu-lapu, which was larger than the man lying next to it.

The fishermen sold the colossal catch for P12,000.

According to marine experts, groupers can grow up to 8 feet and weigh up to 200 kilos.

Known for its rich marine biodiversity, the Babuyan Channel continues to be a vital fishing ground.

Experts, however, reminded the public that they practice sustainable fishing to protect the ecosystem and ensure that future generations can also benefit from the Babuyan Channel’s bounty.
