BAGUIO CITY – The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has committed a ₱20-million grant to the City Government of Baguio to support the development of its athletic bowl and other sports facilities, a move expected to strengthen the city's sports programs and bid to become a sports tourism hub.

The announcement was made by PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio during the flag-raising ceremony at Baguio City Hall on June 8, through the live stream video of Baguio City Information Office.

Addressing city officials, department heads, and stakeholders, Gregorio expressed confidence in the city's leadership and commitment to sports development.

“I believe in the leadership of Mayor Benjie Magalong,” Gregorio said as he announced that he and the PSC commissioners would provide a ₱20-million check to the City of Baguio.

According to Gregorio, the grant will help advance the development of the city's athletic bowl and other sports-related initiatives while supporting Baguio's vision of becoming a sports tourism capital.

The PSC chairman also highlighted Baguio's long-standing contribution to Philippine sports, recalling the city's role during the Gintong Alay era at the National Teachers Camp. He noted that the Teachers Camp oval continues to serve around 1,000 residents daily and revealed plans for the PSC to assist in constructing a world-class football pitch at the facility within four months.

“This is not a donation because we just want to help. This is a donation because you are helping yourselves,” Gregorio told the audience.

He added that the PSC hopes its assistance will help nurture future national athletes and Olympians from Baguio and the Cordillera region.

Mayor Benjamin “Benjie” Magalong welcomed the announcement, while city officials expressed gratitude to the PSC for its support. The city government is expected to coordinate with the commission on the implementation of projects covered by the grant.

Gregorio concluded by expressing hope that the ₱20-million assistance would be the first of additional support for Baguio's expanding sports development programs.
