Abra, Philippines – A total of 250 aspirants who earlier filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) in Abra signified not to run anymore for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

Said number is based on Commission on Election records as of Oct. 18, 2023.

Of said number, 48 of them were barangay captain aspirants, 88 for barangay councilor, 24 for SK Chairman, and 90 for SK Kagawad.

Data revealed most of those who withdrew their candidacy are from the capital town, Bangued with 49. This is followed by Licuan Ba-ay – 40, Tineg – 23, Bucay – 17, Lagangilang – 16, Luba – 13, Pidiagan – 11, and Pilar – 10.

For other municipalities: Boliney, Dolores, Sallapadan, and San Juan recorded 8 withdrawals each; Bucloc and San Quintin - five each; Tayum- 4; Manabo, San Isidro, and Lacub – 3 each; and Daguioman, Lagayan, Peñarrubia, Tubo, and Villaviciosa with two withdrawals each.

Three municipalities which include Danglas, La Paz, and Langiden, meantime, did not record any withdrawal.

In a statement, Provincial Election Supervisor, Atty. Mae Richelle Belmes disclosed that most of those who have withdrawn from the polls are avoiding disqualification cases since they are related to incumbent officials within the 4th degree of consanguinity.

Although there were reports that some were forced to withdraw, the lawyer clarified that their office cannot take action against it since none of the aspirants who withdrew filed complaints at their office.

As for cases filed regarding the 2023 BSKE Elections, Belmes said there were already three cases filed for premature campaigning. Two cases are from Zone 6 in Bangued, and another case is from Bilabila, Sallapadan.
