“When I was your age, I was average and a happy-go-lucky student. Who knew that one student with a folded notebook in his pocket would one day be standing right in front of you delivering an inspirational message as your Mayor?” - Mayor Almar Malannag

BALBALAN, Kalinga — From an “average, happy-go-lucky” student carrying nothing more than a folded notebook to becoming the municipal chief executive, Mayor Almar Malannag reminded Balbalan’s youth that no dream is too big if they are willing to start now and trust the process.

Addressing young people from the municipality’s 14 barangays during the Linggo ng Kabataan celebration on August 8, Malannag looked back on his younger years, describing himself as an ordinary student who went to school with just a folded notebook and a “happy-go-lucky” attitude.

“When I was your age, I was average and a happy-go-lucky student. Who knew that one student with a folded notebook in his pocket would one day be standing right in front of you delivering an inspirational message as your Mayor?” he said.

Drawing from his own experience, Malannag told the younger generation that life can be unpredictable, just as he never imagined that he would one day become mayor.

He said he simply learned to trust the process and encouraged the youth to believe that their dreams are possible if they take the first step.

The local chief executive urged the youth to maximize available resources, learn quickly and wisely, share generously, and build partnerships in an increasingly digital world.

“Remember, be brave enough to start. Be humble enough to learn. Be stubborn enough to finish. Choose curiosity over cynicism, service over selfies, and collaboration over competition,” he urged.

Malannag also reminded the youth that even the smallest steps can eventually lead to a brighter future.

“Dream big. Start small. Start now. Have faith in the process, and keep showing up,” he said, wrapping up his message.

His journey from an ordinary student to the town’s mayor served as a reminder to the young people of Balbalan that where they begin does not necessarily determine where they will end—as long as they have the courage to begin.
