5 more Covid-19 UK variant cases recorded in the Cordillera

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Cordillera Administrative Region again recorded 5 additional UK variant Covid-19 cases. This is confirmed by the Department of Health this Friday, February 5, 2021.

Of the total number, 3 are from Bontoc, Mt. Province and 2 are from La Trinidad, Benguet. Two of the cases of Bontoc are female aged 25 and 54, while the other one is a 31-year old male. As for Benguet, the cases are a 15-year old female and an 84-year old male.

Three of these cases (2 females from Bontoc and 1 female from La Trinidad) according to DOH are close contacts of the previously detected UK variant cases in the region coming from said areas.

As for the two other cases, one (31-year old male from Bontoc) is still to be verified if it is part of the Bontoc cluster while the other one (84-year old man) is part of a separate cluster of cases in the city and was reported to have died on January 24, 2021.

In earlier report, 13 cases of the said variant were recorded in the region.

During a virtual press conference on February 1, 2020, DOH reported that 89 contacts of the 13 UK variant Covid-19 cases in Bontoc and La Trinidad have tested positive for Covid-19.

Meantime, DOH said they shall conduct immediate case investigation, intensified contact tracing and back tracing to identify the source of those newly detected cases with no known link to previously reported UK variant cases.

The health department added they shall continue bio-surveillance activities.

“Succeeding whole genome sequencing activities are expected to determine the extent of transmission in areas where B.1.1.7 variant cases have been detected to provide better representation from all regions,” the agency likewise reported.

As of this writing, the country recorded a total of 25 UK variant cases.
