One Leptospirosis case recorded: Tanudan MESU urges farmers to wear boots, avoid floodwaters

TANUDAN, Kalinga – Health personnel in Tanudan are reminding residents to wear boots while working on farms and avoid wading through floodwaters after the municipality recorded one case of leptospirosis in 2026.

During the third-quarter clustered meeting of the local special bodies, health board and health councils of Tanudan on September 18, the Municipal Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (MESU) reported one leptospirosis case recorded in the municipality from January 4 to September 12, 2026.

The case was recorded in Pangol.

Tanudan recorded two leptospirosis cases with no deaths in 2025.

Although there has been no reported surge in cases this year, health personnel urged iTanudans to take precautions, particularly those working in farms.

Residents were advised to wear protective boots while farming, avoid walking or wading through floodwaters, and seek medical consultation immediately after possible exposure to contaminated water, especially if symptoms develop.

Meanwhile, 69 leptospirosis cases were recorded across Kalinga from January 4 to August 22, 2026, representing a 245-percent increase compared with the same period last year.

Two deaths were reported among the cases—a 7-year-old boy from Gobgob, Tabuk City, and a 21-year-old man from Babalag East, Rizal.

Health authorities continue to remind the public that avoiding potentially contaminated floodwater and using protective footwear are important measures to reduce the risk of leptospirosis.
