59 teen-pregancy cases recorded in Kalinga in six months; OPHO cites curiosity and online courtship as possible causes

TABUK CITY, Kalinga — Fifty-nine adolescents in Kalinga gave birth during the first six months of 2026, with the provincial health office citing curiosity, online courtship and relationships as among the factors linked to early pregnancy.

Data from the Office of the Provincial Health Officer (OPHO), through its Population Program Unit, showed 59 adolescent births from January to June 2026. Of the total, 31 were recorded in the first quarter and 28 in the second quarter.

OPHO Adolescent Program Coordinator PPO IV Christel Joana Callangan said some adolescents become exposed to early pregnancy because of curiosity, while others may see relationships as a way of escaping responsibilities or problems at home.

She also pointed to the growing practice of online courtship, where adolescents may develop relationships with people they have not personally met.

“Yung mga ibang reason kasi kung bakit sila nag-i-engage is curiosity, tsaka way of escaping mga obligation nila sa family. Siguro mga iba ayaw na nila mag-aral. Siguro yung iba is masyado nilang mahal [ang] partner nila. Nagsisimula na rin kasi ang courtship online kahit di nila personally kilala yung tao, nagpapaligaw na sila...” Callangan said.

She added that the easy exchange of explicit photos through messaging platforms can also contribute to risky sexual encounters among adolescents.

“Sa Messenger, hot na hot na sila, ang dali nang mag-send ng explicit photos. So pag nagkita na sila, first encounter agad is nag-engage na sila sa intercourse,” she said.

Despite the 59 adolescent births recorded during the period, Kalinga reported zero repeat adolescent births in the first semester of 2026.

The first quarter recorded an adolescent birth rate of 1.24, while the second quarter recorded 3.08.

Callangan said the province continues to conduct information drives in schools with partner agencies and strengthen adolescent health services to raise awareness and help prevent early pregnancy.

She expressed hope that adolescent births would decline in the second semester, stressing the need to sustain information campaigns and adolescent health interventions.

As of this writing, Kalinga has 27 accredited Adolescent-Friendly Health Facilities (AFHFs), including one Level I hospital, six district hospitals, seven primary care facilities and 13 barangay health stations. The province also has eight teen centers.

Two of the facilities are Level II-accredited AFHFs: Tabuk City Health Center I and Pinukpuk RHU II.
