Baguio City, Philippines – A 32-year-old miner from Ucab, Itogon, Benguet is now in custody after an improvised explosive device was thrown near the sinkhole area along Magsaysay Avenue, Baguio City at dawn on Monday, injuring 14 individuals.

Prior to the blast, the suspect—who was reportedly intoxicated—allegedly harassed a woman, a caretaker of a snack shop. The incident prompted bystanders to intervene, leading to the suspect being mauled. He initially left the area but later returned and threw a suspected improvised explosive device (IED), according to a press release from the city police office.

Public Information Officer PMaj Marcy Grace of the BCPO said the IED contained black powder with a blasting cap and nails, and was placed inside a plastic bag.

Following the explosion, a witness reported the incident to authorities, prompting an immediate police response and the suspect’s subsequent arrest. He is set to face multiple charges, including acts of lasciviousness, physical injuries—depending on the extent of harm and medico-legal assessment—and illegal possession of explosives.

All of the injured victims are adults, two of them are female.

Ten victims sustained minor injuries and have already been discharged, while the others continue to receive medical treatment and are expected to recover, Mayor Benjamin Magalong earlier stated.

Meanwhile, local police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion, including claims that the incident occurred in a gambling area.

Authorities said the blast appears to be an isolated case.
