Balbalan, Kalinga will soon market their locally made muscovado

Balbalan, Kalinga – Muscovado is seen as one preferred alternative to popular commercial sugar in the market, owing to the fact that it contains higher levels of various minerals than processed white sugar and is considered to be healthier.

To increase the source of income of the sugarcane farmers in Balbalan, the Negosyo Center based in the municipality conducted a one-day skills training on muscovado processing.

The activity was held on December 6, 2022, in Barangay Tawang, Balbalan and was participated by 21 members of Tawang Farmers Association and barangay officials.

Said skill training is under the program of the Provincial Office of the Department of Trade and Industry in the province. It aims to introduce muscovado processing as an alternative source of income for farmers in Balbalan which they could sell to tourists and visitors in the municipality.

It is expected that with the training, the sugarcane farmers shall soon produce their own muscovado for the market.

During the training, Marina Calanog, the owner of YJ's Food Products shared her expertise in muscovado processing.

Calanog taught the importance of Good Manufacturing Practices. She also discussed product costing and pricing to guide the participants to come up with the right cost and price for their products.

The owner of YJ's Food Products let the participants perform all the key steps in producing muscovado, from extracting sugarcane juice up to pulverizing.

Meantime, the participants suggested the innovation of bamboo packaging material as a substitute for cellulose packaging for the muscovado products to maximize the resources available in the community.

The participants were thankful for the initiative of NC-Balbalan for the new skills they learned from the training, allowing them to augment their income.
