Balbalan set to defend championship title at 2024 Kalinga Provincial Athletic Meet

Balbalan, Kalinga – The spirited athletes of Balbalan are gearing up for the pinnacle of youth sports in Kalinga, aiming to retain their title as overall champions at the upcoming 2024 Kalinga Provincial Athletic Meet.

In the 2023 edition held in Rizal on April 14-16, Balbalan asserted its dominance by clinching the overall championship, amassing an impressive 63 gold medals, 44 silver medals, and 30 bronze medals – the largest medal haul of the competition.

While individual events such as swimming, taekwondo, boxing, and track and field contributed significantly to their success, Mayor Almar Malannag emphasized the collaborative effort of the local government and the Department of Education (DepEd) in Balbalan to ensure the athletes receive optimal preparation.

The mayor's proactive approach extends beyond moral support; he spearheaded an ordinance during his tenure as a councillor, ensuring cash incentives for deserving athletes. This incentive scheme has become an additional motivating factor for Balbalan's athletes during sports competitions.

Expressing confidence in their abilities, Mayor Malannag affirmed the LGU's unwavering support for the athletes, anticipating another triumphant performance.

In the event that they fall short, Mayor Malannag encouraged the athletes to participate wholeheartedly, emphasizing that the experience itself is a valuable opportunity. Participation may also pave the way for further competitions, such as the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) Games.

Wishing the athletes good luck, Mayor Malannag assured them of the community's backing and expressed hope for another successful campaign.

The Balbalan athletes are set to carry the town's banner high, aiming not just for victory but for the experience and camaraderie that sports bring.
