Bucay, Abra – A day before the official start of the village and youth polls this year, a candidate for barangay kagawad was killed in a daytime gun attack in Bangbangcag, Bucay, Abra.

The incident transpired at 7:20 AM on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

The victim, along with his son, was heading to another barangay in the municipality using a motorcycle on said date when the shooting incident happened.

Police said a riding-in-tandem tailed the vehicle used by the father and son using a black motorcycle, and upon reaching Sitio Nagpasinan of said barangay, it was then that the suspects fired at the victim twice. The firearm used in the shooting is said to be a short pistol.

Thereafter, the suspects fled the scene while the victim was ferried to St. Therese Hospital in Talogtog, Dolores, where he died while being treated.

The victim is identified by police as Catalino Turalba Sr., 52, married and a resident of Barangay Bangbangcag.

Police are now conducting hot pursuit operations against the suspects.

Meantime, Provincial Election Supervisor Mae Richelle Belmes, in an interview with national media, said the incident could be considered the first election-related violence in the region this October 2023 BSKE.

“I spoke with the chief of police of Bucay and asked if this was an election-related incident (ERI), and according to his initial assessment, considering that the victim was a candidate, that [incident was] an ERI,” the lawyer was quoted saying.

In connection, 16 out of 21 barangays in the said municipality have already been recommended to be included as ‘election areas of concern’.

However, no reports, as of yet, has been released if said recommendations have been approved by the concerned agency.
