TABUK CITY, Kalinga — For 32 years, PCol. Gilbert Fati-ig wore the Philippine National Police badge, moving from one assignment to another, answering calls of duty and spending long hours away from home.

But behind the police colonel who eventually became chief of the Kalinga Police Provincial Office was a woman who quietly carried another kind of responsibility—the responsibility of keeping the family together.

Her name is Salvacion Fati-ig, the wife who stood beside Gilbert throughout his more than three decades in the police service.

When Fati-ig finally removed his PNP badge during his retirement ceremony on October 9, 2026, at the Kalinga Astrodome, he made sure that the woman behind his uniform was not forgotten.

In his valedictory address, Fati-ig acknowledged that his career came with sacrifices not only for him but also for his wife and their five children.

“You accepted the sacrifices that came with my profession – the long hours, missed family occasions, sleepless nights, and the many times when duty called me away from home,” Fati-ig told Salvacion.

For a police family, duty does not always end when an officer leaves for work.

There are missed birthdays, celebrations and ordinary days that cannot be brought back.

There are nights when a wife waits for a husband who is out on assignment and children who grow up knowing that their father may not always be home.

For the Fati-ig family, the demands of police service sometimes reached even the most important moments of family life.

Fati-ig recalled that Salvacion once gave birth to one of their children while he was out of the country serving as part of the Philippine Contingency to the United Nations.

It was one of the many moments when duty separated him from his family.

Yet Salvacion remained.

While he wore the badge, she carried the family

Fati-ig’s police career began in 1994 when he entered the service as a Police Officer 1 after completing his Bachelor of Science in Criminology.

Two years later, he entered the Philippine National Police Academy and graduated in 1998.

From there, his career continued to rise until he reached the rank of police colonel and eventually became the police provincial director of his home province, Kalinga.

But every promotion, every new assignment and every additional responsibility also meant adjustments for the family.

While Fati-ig responded to the demands of police work, Salvacion and their children had to adapt to his absence.

It was a sacrifice that often remained outside the photographs of ceremonies, the official reports and the stories of police accomplishments.

That is why, in his final speech as a police officer, Fati-ig deliberately turned the spotlight toward his family.

“All of the accomplishments behind my badge was my family,” he said.

“Every achievement I received was also your achievement. Every success I had was also because of your love and support. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and for standing beside me.”

The quiet partner behind the uniform

Fati-ig came from Bangad, Tinglayan, where he grew up as a simple boy dreaming of making his family proud.

He eventually became the highest-ranking police officer in his home province during his stint as Kalinga police director from October 15, 2025 to October 9, 2026.

During his one-year command, the Kalinga Police Provincial Office recorded hundreds of arrests and seizures and carried out operations against illegal drugs, firearms, gambling and illegal logging.

But when asked to look back at his 32 years in uniform, Fati-ig did not speak only about those accomplishments.

He spoke about the people who made them possible.

And among those people, his wife held a special place.

The police badge may have belonged to him, but the sacrifices that came with it were shared by the entire family.

A new chapter together

After more than three decades of police service, Fati-ig is now entering civilian life.

For the first time in many years, there will be fewer calls that require him to leave home, fewer assignments that keep him away and, perhaps most importantly, more ordinary days with the people who waited for him through the years.

His retirement therefore marks more than the end of a police career.

For Salvacion, it may also mark the beginning of a different chapter—one in which her husband no longer has to choose between a call of duty and a family occasion.

And after 32 years of sharing him with the PNP, she can finally have more of Gilbert at home.

As Fati-ig put it in his farewell message, every success he achieved was also his family’s success.

The badge is now off.

But the woman who stood behind it remains part of the story of how it was carried for 32 years.
