Batanes logs first COVID-19 related death, a senior citizen with comorbidity


Batanes, Cagayan Valley- A 70-year-old male residing in the Municipality of Basco is the first COVID-19 related death in the island province of Batanes, as reported through its Provincial Government on Sunday, September 26, 2021.


According to Provincial Information Officer Justine Socito, the man died due to acute respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia, which is High-Risk secondary to COVID-19.


In a Facebook post of PIA Region 2, the man was admitted to the Batanes General Hospital (BGH) and died on Saturday, September 25, 2021.


As of September 27, 2021, there are 424 active cases in Batanes; with Basco having the greatest number of 315 cases followed by Uyugan with 35, Mahatao with 26 cases, Ivana-19, Sabtang 15, and Itbayat with 14 cases.


With the one death toll and 424 active cases, 18 have recovered, 2 under critical level, and 8 were recorded as severe in BGH.


The provincial government then asked the public to continue working hand-in-hand to keep communities safe with the strict monitoring observation of health protocols such as the use of face masks at all times, social distancing, and proper hygiene.

The province is still under ECQ until October 4.
