Kibungan, Benguet – A Philippine serpent eagle (Spilornis holospilus) was successfully rescued by a concerned resident in Kibungan, Benguet, on Thursday, October 9, after he found it unable to fly.

According to a local media outlet in the area, the resident discovered the eagle in a weakened condition, took prompt action to ensure its safety, and later turned it over to the Kibungan Municipal Police Station (MPS).

The Kibungan MPS, upon receiving the bird, immediately coordinated with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) for appropriate care and assessment to determine its health condition. The police said that once the eagle has regained full strength and is confirmed healthy, it will be released back into its natural habitat.

The Philippine serpent eagle, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), is found only in the Philippines and nowhere else in the world.

Under the agency’s Administrative Order No. 2019-09, it is listed as part of the “Other Wildlife Species,” meaning it is recognized and protected, though not classified as critically endangered.
