Cagayano soldier among those killed in Albay ambush

Cagayan, Philippines – Enrile town in Cagayan paid homage to its fallen hero - Private John Paul Adalim who was among the two soldiers killed by rebels in Cotmon village of Camalig, Albay on Monday morning, February 20, 2023.

Private Mark June Esico also died in the ambush.

The two soldiers were members of the Philippine Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion and were part of the search and rescue team formed for the crashed Cessna plane in the province.

In a statement, Southern Luzon Command said both were at the market in said village to resupply their unit’s needs when five armed men indiscriminately fired upon them.

The two suffered severe bullet wounds causing their immediate death.

“The CTG (communist-terrorist group) took advantage of the fact that the troops of the 31st Infantry Battalion were busy assisting in the search and rescue operation of the crashed Cessna aircraft in Albay after they ambushed two soldiers who were just buying supplies,” said the Chief of 9th Infantry Division Public Affairs Office, Capt. Frank Roldan.

Grieving Adalim and Esico's families cried for justice to be served, he relayed.

In a related report, Santos Binamera Command of the New People's Army operating in Albay admitted to the killing of the two soldiers.

The remains of Adalim, the eldest son of Mae Capanan Adalim and Herminio Adalim may be brought home to Cagayan today, as reported by Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

“Our snappiest salute for your gallantry Sir! May your soul rest in eternal peace,” extended the local government of Enrile.
