Updated: May 8

Tabuk City, Kalinga - While an increasing trend of dengue infection has been observed in Cordillera from January to April 20 this year, cases in Kalinga noted the opposite trend, at least by 50 percent.

In said period, 52 cases were recorded in the province. Last year's record for the same period was 102.

Along with Kalinga, cases in Ifugao also went down. The record showed that in the same period last year, cases of the disease were 143, while this year, 142 cases were reflected in said province.

As per the Department of Health - Cordillera's data, a 10 percent hike in the vector-borne disease was recorded in the region. This is from 1,041 cases to 1,145.

Contributing to said number is Benguet which listed the highest cases out of all provinces in the region. From 363 cases last year, it went up to 382 for the first four months of 2023.

Baguio City, on the other hand, registered 230 dengue victims this year, which is 8 percent higher compared to 213 last year.

For Apayao, the record disclosed an 80 percent increase in cases, from 90 to 162, while for Abra, it registered an 82 percent hike, from 30 to 60.

Lastly, for Mountain Province, a 21 percent increase was observed, from 97 cases in the same period last year to 117 this time.

Of all the cases, DOH-Cordillera said the youngest dengue victim is a 3-month-old baby, while the eldest is a 94-year-old elderly.

With the disease’s upward trend in the region, the region’s health department reminds the public anew to be vigilant and adhere to preventive measures.

These include the 5S Strategy – Search and Destroy, Self-protection, Seeking Early Consultation, Support Fogging and Spraying, and Staying hydrated.
