Egay’s death toll in Cordillera now at 14, 6 others still missing

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Following the conduct of a series of search and retrieval operations, the number of fatalities in the Cordillera region due to Super Typhoon Egay has increased to 14 while six individuals remain missing.


The death toll is anticipated to change once updates are made and potential new casualties are confirmed by authorities.


Based on the August 2 report by the Department of Health-Cordillera, 7 deaths were recorded in Benguet, 3 in Abra, 2 in Apayao, and 1 each in Baguio City and Mt. Province. The majority of the recorded deaths were caused by landslides.

The most recently discovered body is the remains of one of the individuals buried in a massive landslide in Calanasan, Apayao.


He was identified by authorities as Paustino Amlag, 50, a resident of said area. Five others are still being retrieved by rescuers.


In Benguet, seven deaths were all victims of landslide incidents that transpired during the height of the typhoon on July 26 and 27 were listed.


Four of the casualties were victims of a landslide incident that buried a house in Lower Abatan, Buguias at 4 AM on July 26.


Three others were from Kibungan, a woman who still has missing body parts; Itogon, a-year old male from Sitio Besil, Gumatdang; and a 37-year-old male in Kayapa, Bakun who was buried alive in his hut at Sitio Damuco.

In Abra, three individuals were confirmed dead by authorities during an emergency meeting held last week by Abra Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).


These include a female teenager recovered by authorities in a river in Pilar, Abra. Her mother, meantime, is still missing. No reports have been released regarding the identity of the said fatalities.


In Baguio City, a teenager died after he was trapped in a landslide-covered house in Bakakeng. The sole casualty in Mt. Province, meantime, is a 38-year-old man from Betwagan, Sadanga.


In the case of injured individuals, Civil Defense-Cordillera said 152 were noted in the region.
