Tinglayan, Kalinga – European Union Ambassador to the Philippines, Luc Véron, considers meeting and getting a tattoo from the esteemed hand-tapped tattoo artist Apo Whang-od an incredible experience.

In his post on X, formerly Twitter, Véron shared his experience of getting a tattoo with the legendary tattoo artist during his recent visit to the province, where he was adorned by Whang-od's signature tattoo—a set of three dots that symbolize Whang-od and her grandnieces.

He likewise described Whang-od as ‘a protector of a tradition that has been passed down for centuries,’ further endorsing her to be bestowed with the prestigious National Living Treasures Award.

Apart from meeting Whang-od, the visit also served as an avenue for discussions spanning cultural exchanges, economic partnerships, and potential initiatives with the local officials headed by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab.

The engagement between the EU ambassador and the local officials, as hinted, awaits future collaboration between the two for future developments that benefit them mutually.

Véron, in his statement, expressed gratitude to the mayor, along with the people of Buscalan, for the warm welcome and facilitating the visit, emphasizing that the cultural wealth in which he was immersed will be cherished forever.

As for Mayor Gumilab, he also expressed his gratitude to the ambassador for including their humble municipality in his itinerary.

The lawyer-politician said the visitation was beneficial for Tinglayan as it served as a meaningful platform for dialogue, fostering a strong bond between Kalinga leaders and the European Union representative.

“It marked a bridge between two worlds, transcending geographical distances to celebrate the richness of cultural diversity and build foundations for lasting connections,” he added.
