Apayao, Philippines – Once known as a stronghold of the New People’s Army (NPA), Marag Valley in Luna, Apayao has transformed into a thriving eco-tourism destination, showcasing its scenic rock formations, crystal-clear rivers, and pristine environment to more than 300 runners and adventurers during Apayao’s 31st Founding Anniversary celebration on February 21, 2026.

Previously dubbed “No Man’s Land” for being an insurgency hub and NPA training center in Northern Luzon from the 1980s to the early 1990s, Marag Valley has since undergone significant change. Through sustained military operations and government-led rehabilitation efforts, the former rebel stronghold has transitioned into a peaceful and developing eco-tourism site.

Today, the valley is home to breathtaking limestone formations such as the rugged Dupag Rock Formations, crystal-clear rivers, and underground wonders like the Manacota Underground River.

Marking the province’s 31st Founding Anniversary, the first-ever Marag Valley Trail Run was launched, drawing at least 300 participants from Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Cagayan, and nearby areas. Runners navigated scenic trails and river crossings, experiencing firsthand the natural beauty of the valley on their way to the finish line. The trail run was among the highlights of the 31st Apayao Foundation Day celebration.

Vice Governor Kyle Mariah Chelsea S. Bulut-Cunan, whose office spearheaded the event, said the activity aimed to promote health and wellness, encourage eco-tourism and environmental appreciation, and raise historical awareness about the valley’s transformation.

The top three finishers in each category were awarded medals and cash incentives.
