Tabuk City, Kalinga—Four Cordillera provinces were identified to receive corn hybrid seeds amounting to P9,890,000 from the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Cordillera.

Recipients are 324 corn farmers in Mountain Province, 500 in Kalinga, 666 in Ifugao, and 563 in Apayao.

Aimed to increase and sustain the local production of corn, the 2,053 farmers identified above were given each a bag of corn hybrid seeds.

DA-CAR reported that corn contributed P43 billion or 5.7% of the Gross Value Added (GVA) in the agri-fishery sector in 2019.

Likewise, the highest level of local corn production of 7.97 million metric tons with a ten-year average growth rate of 2.6% was also recorded during that year.

According to a press release by DA-Cordillera, the data was presented during the agency’s midyear Assessment conducted on June 23 to 24, 2021 at Guisad, Baguio City.

Regional Corn and Cassava Banner Program Coordinator Gerardo Banawa said the distribution of corn seeds is under the Corn Seed Assistance Program of the agency which enables corn farmers to avail of quality corn seeds to increase local production especially this pandemic.

To implement the program, the agency partnered with 29 active corn cluster organizations, 2 in Mt. Province, 5 in Kalinga, 14 in Ifugao, and 8 in Apayao.

These organizations were tasked to give one bag of seeds for a half-hectare farm to corn farmers who are also members of the corn cluster. They will collect half the amount of the corn seeds.

Collected amount will be used for the procurement of corn seeds to be given to the second-in-line beneficiaries who are also members of the cluster. This scheme is described by the agency as the ‘roll-over scheme’.

To avail of this program, the agency said that requesting farmers must be registered at the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture and should be a member of the corn cluster.
