Seconds from tragedy: 19-year-old spotted struggling under Abusag Bridge in Baggao, Cagayan rescued alive

BAGGAO, Cagayan — A 19-year-old woman was rescued alive after she was found in the water beneath Abusag Bridge in Baggao, Cagayan, at around 4:20 p.m. on August 22, 2026.

The Baggao Municipal Police Station (MPS), together with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Baggao and Rescue 116 Baggao, responded to an emergency call reporting a woman in distress beneath the bridge.


Responding personnel immediately proceeded to the area and coordinated their efforts to reach the woman, who was found in the water below the bridge.


After a swift rescue operation, responders successfully pulled the woman from the water alive. She was subsequently given the necessary assessment and assistance following the incident.


The rescue drew attention online after videos showing the incident and the emergency response circulated on social media.


One of the circulating posts was shared by Jovanni Caballero Viray, whose post claimed that the woman allegedly jumped into the water. However, the claim has not been independently verified.


The Baggao MPS has not confirmed whether the woman jumped from the bridge or the circumstances that led to her being in the water. No official statement has been released establishing the cause of the incident.


Authorities have likewise not disclosed further details about the woman’s condition or the events immediately preceding the rescue.


The operation was carried out under the leadership of PLTCOL Manuel L. Viloria Jr., chief of police of Baggao MPS, with personnel from the BFP Baggao and Rescue 116 Baggao assisting in the response.


The incident highlights the importance of immediate coordination between residents and emergency responders, particularly in situations where a person’s life may be at risk.


The Baggao MPS urged the public to immediately report emergencies and seek assistance from authorities whenever they encounter individuals in distress or danger.
