Tanudan, Kalinga - Members of the Cornerstone Muscovado Association in Barangay Anggacan, Tanudan are now ready to venture into muscovado (sugar) processing and are eyeing for commercial production.

This is following the recent one-day skills training on Muscovado Sugar Processing with Product Costing and Pricing by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)- Kalinga and Negosyo Center (NC) Tabuk City for the 15 members of the association, held at Barangay Anggacan on June 21.

Muscovado is refined sugar made by evaporating and draining off the molasses of the juice of sugarcane, producing a healthier and natural sugar compared to the commercialized brown sugar which has chemical content.

NC-Tabuk City Business Counselor Kevin Racraquin related that the skills training is the utmost requested by the association however, it was postponed due to the restrictions of the pandemic.

He conveyed that the production of sugarcane is the prime product of the residents in the barangay considering that it has the largest plantation of sugarcane among the other barangays of the municipality.

Aside from muscovado processing, the residents also produce coffee and heirloom rice.

Racraquin shared that the association, which is now almost 2 years, explained that the skills training could boost their knowledge and improve their performance in processing their product.

“It is a big contribution sa community kasi they will be producing their own product that will be marketed within Kalinga or other nearby provinces din. So ito malaking impact din sa kanilang community, kasi sabi nila actually itong training na to magagamit ito na pandagdag sa product nila like coffee, heirloom rice ngayon muscovado sugar processing na din yung naidagdag,” he shared.

In addition, the members were trained on Product Costing and Pricing then oriented them on the proper computation of labor productivity, raw materials, equipment maintenance, and other factors.

Meantime, Racraquin intends to propose to visit the sugar processing facility located in Rizal, Kalinga for familiarization and observation purposes as well as bookkeeping training soon.

The Muscovado Sugar Processing with Product Costing and Pricing was discussed and presented by Richard Cabilangan and Michiko Fate Bingcan.
