Historic Win: Kalinga Schools Division bags overall title in Regional School Paper Contest

Tabuk City, Kalinga – iKalinga young journalists and their advisers brought the province a historic victory in the 2026 Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) after securing the overall championship in this year’s School Paper Contest.


From March 10 to 12, the Department of Education–Cordillera gathered school publications across the region for the RSPC held at Divine Word College of Bangued in Bangued, Abra. The annual event, which features various journalism activities, serves as a platform for young journalists to hone their skills and as a qualifying stage for the National Schools Press Conference.


One of the major competitions in the RSPC is the School Paper Contest, which evaluates campus publications based on the quality of their sections, including the news page, editorial, feature, sports, layout and design, and other technical components.


This year, the Kalinga Schools Division earned a total of 334 points in the School Paper Contest, securing its first-ever overall championship in the competition.


The province accumulated the points after dominating the Elementary Filipino category and placing third in the Elementary English category. Meanwhile, Kalinga also ranked third in both the Secondary Filipino and Secondary English categories.


Top placers


For the English Elementary school paper category, Alingag of Balbalan Central School won 1st place, followed by Bananao of Pantikian Elementary School in 2nd place, and Kajjanga of Balantoy Elementary School in 4th place.


In the Filipino Elementary category, Bayawak of Buaya Elementary School secured 1st place, Polawel of Balbalan Central School placed 2nd, and Tabagan of Tawang Elementary School finished 4th.


For the Secondary English and Filipino categories, The Theresian Voice of Saint Theresita’s School of Balbalan placed 3rd, Alitaptap of Western Kalinga National High School secured 5th place, while Salaknib, also from Saint Theresita’s School of Balbalan, finished 4th.


The achievement marks a significant milestone for the province’s young journalists and highlights the growing strength of campus journalism in Kalinga.
