Tabuk City, Kalinga – Governor James Edduba of Kalinga has called on the officials of the various local government units in the province to bolster their support to their respective health system, ensuring that necessary, adequate and quality mental health services are provided to their constituents.

Expressing concern over the increasing suicide cases in the locality, the head of the provincial government stressed the seriousness of suicide and the necessity to take action to curb the trend.

“Suicide is a profound tragedy that leaves behind a weight of sorrow and unanswered questions… These rising numbers reminds us of the profound impact of the mental component of health on the critical need for effective suicide and prevention measures,” said the governor in his message posted by the Provincial Governor’s Office-Information Services.

‘Seeking support is sign of strength not weakness’

Edduba underscored that despite the ‘insurmountable stress and pressure’ we feel, mental well-being should be prioritized and contrary to the common belief, seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

“Let us encourage open and honest conversation about mental health within our families, schools, workplaces and communities. Let us break down the barriers of silence and shame that too often surround mental illness and instead foster an environment of compassion, understanding and support. But beyond awareness and conversation we must also recognized the transformative power of love and connection in suicide prevention,” said the governor.

“Let us reach out to those who are struggling, offering our listening ear and shoulder to lean on and a message of hope. Let us remind each other that we are not alone of our struggles that there is always help and support available,” he added.

He went on to nudge the public to help their leaders build a community where every individual feels valued, supported and empowered to seek help when needed most.

“Let us honor the memory of those who lost to suicide by committing to ourselves to creating a brighter more compassionate future. Let us be vigilant in our efforts to promote mental health and let us never underestimate the profound impact that love, empathy and open communications can have in saving lives,” he concluded.
