680 board ft. illegal Narra lumber recovered in Tanudan

Tanudan, Kalinga – Illegally sawn lumber was recovered by authorities in a forest at Sitio Guimma, Mabaca on Sept. 24, 2023.

Said wood was discovered after forest guards launched surveillance in the area following reports of suspected illegal logging activity, Tanudan Designate Information Officer and Executive Assistant John Ryan Awingan relayed.

Upon confirmation, joint teams composed of the Tanudan LGU led by Mayor Jaedicke Rhoss Dagadag, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Kalinga headed by Imelda Casiwan, the police and the military were dispatched to the place.

The teams seized 41 pieces of Narra flitches with a volume of 680 board feet.

According to Casiwan, they didn’t see any traces of stump which is why the flitches are most likely cut from adjacent mountains. They were just put at Sitio Guimma for easier hauling.

Mayor Dagadag, meantime, has once again reiterated his appeal and warning against illegal logging, emphasizing that people should not wait for the time Tanudan will feel the negative effects of cutting down trees before they realize their importance.

“Makipang-pangaasi nak kanya yu kakailyan nga yTanudan ta isardeng tayo kuma dagita nga illegal nga aramid ta adda pagpatinggaan na dagita. Ken haan tayo kuma urayen nga marikna tayo iti didigra nga epekto iti illegal logging satayo aggaraw,” he said.

He further stressed that the environment should be preserved for the next generation saying, “ken anya ngay ti sangpetan dagiti sumaruno nga henerasyon nu kastuy nga agpukpukan tayo illegally ti kayo?”
