Kalinga bans entry of carabaos from Cagayan to avert anthrax

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The local government of Kalinga imposed a temporary ban on the entry of all carabaos from Cagayan to shield those in the province from Anthrax, a deadly infectious disease that can be transmitted from the animal to human.

The entry of carabaos into the province will remain suspended until the area is cleared from the ‘debilitating disease,’ stated the advisory issued by the Office of the Governor, as released by the Provincial Veterinary (ProVet) Office.

“In the event that the same disease is detected in other areas other than the aforementioned, a temporary ban on the entry carabaos coming from these areas shall also be imposed,” added the advisory dated Dec. 28, 2022.

To recall, four anthrax carrier buffaloes died in Calassitan, Santo Niño, Cagayan - some of which were butchered and were sold as meat to residents.

Some 73 people were exposed to the two slaughtered carabaos and 22 among them showed signs of cutaneous lesions or skin wounds (Human Anthrax), said the Department of Health.

The health department noted those who exhibited symptoms have already recovered.

The health event has been tagged as “controlled” by the department, as of Jan. 03, with no additional cases reported and observed. However, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office No. 02 warned the public to remain vigilant and report ‘any observed abnormalities in their carabaos to local authorities and nearest DA research centers for proper evaluation and treatment if needed.’
