Kalinga bans entry of hogs, pork products from Isabela amid ASF threat

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The provincial government of Kalinga has temporarily banned the entry of pork and pork products originating from Isabela amid confirmed cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in some municipalities of said province.

The advisory did not mention ASF-affected towns in Isabela, but according to an official of the Department of Agriculture—Cagayan Valley, there were cases of deaths in pigs reported in the province's three towns.

In an advisory made by Provincial Governor James Edduba on Monday, September 25, it said the move is a precautionary measure considering that there might be unmonitored ASF cases in some parts of Isabela.

The advisory issued is addressed to all hog shippers, meat vendors, meat shops, municipal agriculture offices, city veterinary office, market and slaughterhouse employees.

Should there be any case of shipping in buying live hogs, pork, and other pork products from said province; the public is urged to coordinate with the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian.

“Immediate confiscation and destruction will be implemented on all live hogs, pork, and pork-based products upon interception,” the advisory reads.

To recall, no cases of ASF has been reported in the province since Rizal, Kalinga was upgraded as a pink zone in January 2023.

Pink zones act as a buffer, where ASF is absent but is nearby an infected zone. It could also be an area that was previously affected by ASF but has been cleared of the ASF virus for at least 90 days.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs that has no cure as of yet.
