Tabuk City, Kalinga – As of November 24, 2020, the number of deaths due to Vehicular Traffic Accidents (VTA) in the province reached 23 after a road crash incident resulted to the death of a motorcycle rider that night at Dananao, Lacnog, Tabuk City.

According to Kalinga Police Provincial Director PCOL Davy Vicente Limmong, initial report showed that a cargo truck after unloading in the area made a U-turn when a motorcycle going towards Tabuk proper struck the right portion of the truck.

The rider then sustained severe head injury and died on the spot. He was rushed to Kalinga Provincial Hospital but was declared Dead on Arrival by the attending physician. The driver of the truck, on the other hand, was brought to the authorities and is now under the custody of Tabuk City Police Station.

Investigation is still ongoing.

Other recent road accidents resulting to death

Meanwhile, just this November 21, a collision of two motorcycles in Calanan resulted to death with the victim declared dead on arrival at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital.

The 23 VTA cases from January to November 24, 2020 is the same with the number of cases recorded on the same period last year.

Limmong said that most vehicles involved in these fatalities are motorcycles and most death happened during the 1st and 3rd quarter of 2020. There were very few accidents during the 2nd quarter due to the enhanced community quarantine.

“Talaga nga vulnerable iti motorcycle [in terms of accidents] considering nga our motorcycle is very light. So ti weight na lang adda ijay taon nga nagkarga. So just imagine nga jay lower na ket very light ta ti weight na adda ditoy ngato ... isunga bassit lang nga agkasjay jay motor, ma out balance kan,” Limmong said.

Meantime, there are 148 VTA incidents recorded in Kalinga from January to November 23, 2020, 95 resulted to physical injury and 31 caused damage to property.
