Tabuk City, Kalinga – The member of the New People’s Army who got killed during a gunfight in Balbalan was a native of Pinukpuk.

The slain cadre was identified as Onal Osias Balao-ing alias ‘Beran’. He was the Commanding Officer of the Rehiyon Yunit Sentro of the Ilocos-Cordillera Regional Committee, says the 5th Infantry Division.

Beran was found lifeless by the authorities following a 10-minute gunfight between the government troops and the members of the Komiteng Larangan Guerilla-Baggas and the Regional Sentro De Gravidad-Ilocos Cordillera Regional Committee on March 9 at Sitio Babacong in Gawaan, Balbalan.

The encounter happened when the military launched a security operation after being notified by the residents about the presence of an armed group in their area. It was later found out that the rebels were allegedly planning a move against the government.

Beran’s family was reached through the help of the Local Government Unit of Balbalan and former rebels. His body was brought to a funeral parlor in Tabuk City where he was positively identified by his kin.

The slain rebel’s remains were brought home by his family.
