No structural failure in Kennon Road slope protection project-DPWH CAR

Baguio City, Philippines – There is no structural failure in the slope protection project along Kennon Road in Camp 6, Tuba, says the Department of Public Works and Highways – Cordillera.

The agency’s statement came after a soil collapse occurred on Tuesday, May 09, in said area, affecting the project being implemented by DPWH. The soil collapse bent the steel bars sideways, causing the closure of road’s both lanes. Only Kennon Road residents are allowed to pass through the deter road in Bued River.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, through his official Facebook page, posted his sentiment regarding the incident.

“This is what happens when engineers shortcut the process. FAILURE TO UNDERTAKE A SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS LEADS TO A WRONG SOLUTION. Waste of resources and inconvenience to the public,” captioned the city mayor.

The ongoing 151-meter mass movement mitigating measure or rock shed was funded with P246 million. Its implementation started in January 2023 and is supposed to be finished by January next year.

“Yung project po is still ongoing, yung naka-install pa lang po dun eh yung mga steel bars and some other sections, meron na pong concrete dun sa mga footing po ng structure pero as you can see po yung nag-collapse na mga steel bars, kaka-install lang po. That is prepared for concreting po sana,” explained the Project Engineer of DPWH-CAR, Engr. Alvin Dulnuan in his interview with PTV Cordillera.

The agency already had a project site for necessary measures.

“We will fast track po yung conduct po ng aming analysis para po mas ma-iprovide po namin yung proper na measure para ma-mitigate po yung problem dun sa site para po hindi po magdulot ng further damage or any accident po,” Dulnuan added.

Meanwhile, motorists are advised to take alternate routes on Marcos Highway, Baguio-Bauang (Naguilian) Road, or Asin-Nangalisan Road (for light vehicles only).
