310 families in Cagayan evacuated amid Typhoon Betty threat

Cagayan, Philippines – Over a thousand residents of Cagayan province fled and were evacuated to safer ground amid the threat of Typhoon "Betty" last estimated at 315 kilometer east of Basco, Batanes.


The preemptive evacuation affected a total of 1,016 individuals or 310 families, as of Tuesday afternoon, May 30, 2023.

Of the figure, 425 individuals or 140 families are from Sta. Ana, 371 individuals or 104 families from Gonzaga, 182 individuals or 54 families from Calayan, and reported Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office through Cagayan Provincial Information Office.


Also evacuated were 18 people or six families from Gattaran and 20 individuals or six families from Sta. Teresita.


In a related report, Commander of the Cagayan Incident Management Team - Zenart Villamar said most of the evacuees are those residing near rivers and mountains prone to landslides.

With heavy rains being experienced in the province, those in Sta. Ana evacuation center were advised to stay as a precaution.


Recent development states all the evacuees from Gonzaga already returned home as the weather in their town improves.


Food packs and assistance were duly distributed to affected families.


Cagayan is currently under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 with potential impacts of minimal to minor threats of wind to life and property.
