Baguio City, Philippines – A total amount of P5.7 million awaits winners of this year’s Young Farmer’s Challenge – Provincial Level Competition.

The Young Farmers Challenge, which started last year, is a competitive financial grant assistance program that intends to encourage youngsters to engage in agriculture and agri- fishery enterprises.

For 2022, the Department of Agriculture said they will be selecting 80 business model canvasses (BMCs) that will partake at the regional level.

The 45 provincial winners under the individual category will be given P50, 000 each, while each of the 35 group entries will get from the agency P100, 000.

The cash prizes, DA said, will be put towards starting up a business enterprise.

In a press release, the agency said the evaluation of some of the 83 BMCs submitted by 106 participants is ongoing in Mountain Province, Benguet, and Baguio City while Apayao and Abra were scheduled last week.

Mt. Province has 16 entries – 14 individuals and 2 groups, Benguet has 14 – 13 individuals and 1 group, Baguio City has 8 – 4 individuals and 4 groups, Abra which has 4 – 3 individuals and 1 group and Apayao has eight BMCs - 4 individuals and 4 groups.

Next week, the agency will be evaluating BMCs of Ifugao and Kalinga. There are 20 BMCs in Kalinga – 16 individuals and 4 groups while Ifugao has 12 – 10 individuals and 2 groups.

The agency said they will be looking into 5 main criteria in deciding the winners – entrepreneurial attribute, innovativeness, revenue stream, value addition, and social responsibility.

“Cultivation and improvement of agricultural land, affiliation to the marginalized sector as well as experience in agri-fishery-related activities are also being taken into consideration,” DA-Cordillera said.

Winners of the Provincial Level competition will be known next week, July 29.
