Parents warned to keep children from risk of drowning at home

Updated: May 15, 2021

Davao Oriental, Philippines - Authorities here are warning parents and guardians to keep an eye on their children from risk of drowning, even while taking a bath at home especially this summer when small children tend to play in water containers.

This warning was reiterated, after Jay, a two-year-old boy, drowned in a bucket of water where he was left taking a bath on his own.

The incident happened on Thursday, May 11, at Barangay Central, Tarragona, Davao Oriental.

In a report of GMA News, Nerlin Grace Sibayan, the mother of the toddler, left her child in the care of her mother named Nerlita.

Lola Nerlita disclosed that she left her grandchild who was then bathing in the bucket to prepare breakfast. By the time she returned, the toddler was already drowning with only his feet above the surface. He was unconscious.

The rescuers were not able to revive the toddler.

"Noong una, nag-laba raw siya. Pagkatapos mag-laba, nag-saing ng pagkain saglit para sa breakfast nila. Pagbalik nila wala na talaga 'yung bata," National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Rovil Matayab relates.

The mother said that they had been allowing Jay to take a bath on his own and could not believe the news.

"Sir hindi ko talaga matanggap sir. Wala akong kamalay- malay sir, doon ako sa Pantukan. Sabi ng nanay ko, patay na daw 'yung anak ko, wala na raw kamalay-malay," Nerlin Grace said.
