Picnic ends in tragedy as 3 teenage girls drown in Magat river

Isabela, Philippines – A picnic in Magat River along Camarunggayan, Aurora, Isabela turned disastrous when three teenagers drowned Monday, May 1, 2023.

The trio went swimming but at around 10 a.m., Rubilyn Racraquin noticed they were calling for help. Since no one among them knew how to save drowning victims, they immediately called for the authorities.

The three were swept by the strong current into the river’s deep portion, causing them to drown, according to the investigator of Aurora police, PCMS Froze Dalimot through Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

Rescuers, with other responding personnel, tried saving the cousins but they were already dead when retrieved.

The victims were identified as Devine Racraquin, 14; Ethel Racraquin, 17; and Faith Joy Cabanilla, 16. They were all residents of Arellano, Quezon, Isabela.

Further investigation revealed the deep portion where the three drowned is a former quarry area.

Aurora police cautioned those who are planning to go to the river for recreational activities to collaborate with authorities for them to know where the safe areas are and prevent such unfortunate occurrences.
