TABUK CITY, Kalinga — Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has underscored the importance of grassroots sports programs in discovering and developing local talent, saying promising athletes can emerge from any community if given the right opportunities and support.

Go conveyed the message through NBI Director III Atty. Gelacio Bongngat during the culminating program of the three-month Tabuk City Inter-Barangay Basketball League at the Kalinga Sports Center on October 24, 2026.

Initiated by Bongngat-owned Rang-ay Eco Adventure Resort in partnership with the Office of Senator Go, the league brought together basketball teams from all 43 barangays of Tabuk City, with games held every weekend.

The top three teams received a total of ₱100,000 in cash prizes. Bulanao Norte claimed the championship and ₱50,000, followed by Bulanao Centro with ₱30,000 and Dagupan Centro with ₱20,000.

“Napakagandang pagkakataon po ng ligang ito para pagsama-samahin ang mga barangay sa pamamagitan ng sports. Sa basketball, hindi lang husay sa court ang nahuhubog. Natututo rin ang kabataan ng disiplina, teamwork, respeto, tiyaga, at kung paano bumangon pagkatapos ng pagkatalo,” Go said.

The senator said young athletes from local communities could eventually compete at regional, national, and even international levels if provided with proper training, opportunities, and support.

“Grassroots sports programs like this are important because talent can come from anywhere,” he stressed.

Go cited several legislative measures he has proposed to strengthen grassroots sports development, including Republic Act No. 11470, which established the National Academy of Sports in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac.

He also cited Senate Bill No. 171, or the proposed National Academy of Sports Regional Expansion Act of 2025; Senate Bill No. 413, or the Philippine National Games bill; Senate Bill No. 678, or the proposed National Tertiary Games Act; and Senate Bill No. 407, which seeks to amend Republic Act No. 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.

Go urged young athletes in Kalinga to continue honing their skills and pursuing their sporting ambitions while prioritizing their education and personal responsibilities.

“Sa ating mga atleta, ipagpatuloy ninyo ang inyong pagsasanay. Huwag kayong matakot mangarap nang mataas. Pero kasabay ng inyong pangarap sa sports, huwag kalimutan ang pag-aaral, pamilya, kalusugan, at responsibilidad sa inyong komunidad,” he said.
